Promote yourself with great ideas not great expense

This week I have invited guest blogger Steve Campbell from Debut to tell us about his strategic idea to get more work. Freelancers can learn a lot from these principles of thinking differently to get the attention of your potential clients.

“As a relatively small Design Agency, we are aware of the costs involved in self promotion can seem daunting but we also know the importance of promoting ourselves outside of our usual client-base.

“We have always maintained good relationships with our clients and have a large proportion of our business referred but we wanted to reach the people who don’t know about either us, or our clients.

“We spent time optimizing our website and now get steady traffic but we had a list of people we wanted to work with and needed to find the most appropriate way to get in touch with them, while being memorable. Which is how we came to develop our ‘100 campaign’.

“We’ve always adopted a marketing approach within our work and usually work alongside Marketing Departments and so we wanted to put this across in our mail-out. Due to cost and because we wanted the
potential clients we were approaching to feel that they had been selected rather than just part of a database of names, we opted for a targeted campaign.

“The card needed to include our brand logo and current style but we also wanted to encourage receivers to interact with us. We set up the campaign as not only a test to see how effective sending our 100 postcards can be when promoting a business but also as an opportunity to showcase of our work.

“The 100 individulas we sent the card to were encouraged to both look through our portfolio and also to respond to the card – ‘Did they like it’ etc. The card has only just hit desks but so far we have had very responses to it.
